It’s Actually Happening!

Hey guys!

So, this is real. LIKE really REAL!! The first blog post of Jill and John Take On. I never thought in a million years that I would actually be writing one of these things, but I am so here it goes!

Let me give you a little background of us, the utterly awesome duo, Jill and John.

Our first photo together.
Our first photo together.

My name is Jillian. I’m 22 years old and a college grad with a degree in PR from the University of Texas at Arlington. Graduating was my number one dream and it came true (I was the first of my family to do it so it’s a pretty BFD). Through dedicating myself to school and work for years, I preferred to Netflix and chill on weekends…so I’m obvi pretty laid back. Also my family is one of my biggest motivators and best friends. They’re like five ferociously funny and diverse friends all rolled into one giant mass of hilarity – I wouldn’t change them for the world. I’ve also always loved to write, and I write about EVERYTHING! If you look in my house I have an unheard amount of diaries and journals filled cover-to-cover about my depression in middle school to meeting the love of my life. Yes, it’s quite the captivating combination. I’ve lived in Texas since I was five years old and let’s face it Texas is the best. Ever. I love Texas, but my travel dreams are bigger than Texas. Shoot, when I was younger, going one hour away from home was an adventure! So now that I’m graduated and all my ducks are in a row, please allow me to introduce my amazing boyfriend that makes all of my dreams become a reality. Without him NONE of this would be happening.

John. Oh where do I begin. John’s a wicked handsome 25-year-old Australian that came to UTA six years ago to attend college (he graduated btw – YAY!) and to play wheelchair basketball for the Movin’ Mavs. In that time he played for the Movin’ Mavs for five years, won the 2015 NWBA National Championships with the Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks, and wrung up a slew of awards. But in order for him to play collegiate wheelchair basketball in America, he had to establish himself in Australia. And he sure did! His tenacity, talent and passion as a competitor shown through on the court as he helped the Australian team win a gold medal at the 2010 World Championships. Whew (he’s so damn cool)! With everything he’s done in America and Australia though, he still had dreams to play professional basketball in Europe…and that dream came true for him too.

So here’s how we came together: we met at UTA. At a frat party. HA. I never thought I’d be caught dead at a frat party. Greek life didn’t interest me in college just because I’d rather stay home with my cat and fulfill my Kardashian fix instead ya know? But anywho, if I hadn’t gone to that party I wouldn’t have met John so I’m definitely happy for that. I would load you guys with all the sappy moments from our relationship because we’re a total cheese tray of cliché, but I won’t because I can’t tell you guys everything, right?! Well, from then on the rest is pretty much history. We’ve been together ever since and I wouldn’t change anything for the world. John’s my best friend.

Now this is how our dreams collided into one big dream – John got a professional contract to play wheelchair basketball in Cologne, Germany with the RBC Koln 99ers! My initial reaction in my head was, “Dang. How long will I have to go without seeing him?! I’m so freaking proud! Wow, he’s such a BALLER! Wahh. I’m sad. Don’t go. Go!” Blah blah blah. Basically an emotion overload. But then he surprised me and told me he’s only going if I go with him…AHHHHHH!! WTF do I say? I can’t believe it I’m freaking out – he wants me to go with him! I literally had no choice but to say YES. Because, uh, everything in our lives’ is aligned and great…and how does anyone say no?!

This is the real reason why I decided to start a blog – to combine my love for writing with my life, and the love of my life.

So there it is – WE are going to Germany! In fact we’re going in less than a week. Wow! Bittersweet but ready. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing to actually live your dreams, and we get to do it together. We couldn’t be more blessed for this amazing opportunity and we’re extremely gracious for all the support and love from our friends and family.
